The Human Subject
Wednesday, February 10 to Saturday, February 27, 2010.
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 11th, 6-9 pm.

Ryerson Gallery presents The Human Subject, a selection of lens-based works created by third year photography students at the Ryerson University School of Image Arts. This collection of emerging artists’ work explores the multifaceted realm of the human subject through deeply individual interpretations. This exhibition addresses the lives of specific individuals through documentary and self-investigation, as well as ways in which the human form conveys a broader message. In many cases, the human subject is not physically represented in these photographs. Instead, it is suggested through the objects we possess, the environments we have created, and the interruption of our thought processes.

In addition to these approaches, the psychological landscape is explored through the recollection of memory and dreams or manifested in the physical form through narrative or theatricality. The salon style arrangement of this work allows for fluid continuity between the images and concepts, while emphasizing individuality in each approach. The result is The Human Subject seen through a vast array of interpretations.

The exhibition features works by Hannah Allen, Leila Ashtari, Jennifer Barrett, John-David Bodnar, Erik Braun, Kate Carlsen, Michael Clarke, Joel Ciesielski, Clare Critchley, Jennifer Cronin, Kira Crugnale, Alex Dametto, Emma Davidson, Sarah Faires, Amy George, Jeremy Gesualdo, Jessica Ginzel, Imma Gobunquin, Kiana Hayeri, Jack Hsiao, Hai Nii Hwang, Jason Kaye, Samantha Keay, Alyssa Lam, Josh MacDonald, Arthur Mola, Vada Nowak, Jimmy Overton, Vanessa Paxton, Yalda Pashai, Andrea Pelletier, Deanna Pizzitelli, Vanessa Phillips, Patrick Stieber, Kyle Tait, Gloria Tang, Edward Terry, Andrew Turski, Rachel Waugh, Andrew Williamson, Michelle Wilson, Carina Yu and Alice Zilberberg.
