See Me, Hear Me
Allie Cadwell, Katie Doner & Mark Neufeld
Wednesday, June 9 to June 19, 2010.
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 10, 7-11 pm.

What is in a portrait? What is hidden there that cannot be seen? See Me, Hear Me presents the work of three artists who use personal voice —as either a primary or ancillary tool— to take us into a deeper and more intimate understanding of their documentary subjects. In Secret Selves, Mark Neufeld employs image sequencing and ambient audio as strategies to extend the portrait of his subjects as he investigates four disabled residents living in a southern Ontario group home.

Through A Fragile Exchange, Katie Doner explores the dynamic nature of the face-to-face encounter and the precariousness of first impressions. In a series of portraits accompanied by audio, the viewer is invited to listen to the subjects as they reflect upon images of their own faces. Allie Caldwell’s radio documentary Unfriend explores the sometimes painful, often shame-inducing, and certainly amusing subject of the friendship breakup.
